Westchester Estate Sales 101

What do you do on your winter weekend? Imagine this scene: throngs of people waiting at the front door of a luxurious home, waiting in the cold, anxious looks on their faces. They arrive early, some at 5 in the morning, waiting for hours until the doors will open at 10 am. They clutch “tickets” in their hands which will allow them entry to the home. They try to peak through the windows, even walking through the back yard, to figure out what could be in the house for them to buy!

Consider this latest weekend craze or pastime if you will, the Westchester Estate sale.  This crowd has even earned themselves the nickname of estate sale mafia, those dealers and collectors ho are willing to practically fight their way into people homes to grab up the latest estate sale treasures, items that they can only get at estate sales, quality items that are resalable, or even will find a place in their homes to be coveted and collected for many years.

These sales are run by estate sale professionals. Companies like EstatesNY who organize, dig out, display and tag the treasures with prices sometimes as low as 1/10th of the retail value were you so inclined to purchase them at a store or online. Wendy King of EstatesNY explains, “people have sales for different reasons. They want to sell almost everything in their homes; they are either downsizing or decluttering, or just need to turn “stuff” into much-needed cash. Or, more than likely they may have lost a family member who was a collector for most of the lives, and need help.”

Estate sale companies are paid on a commission basis to organize and run these sales . The object:  to empty the home, to make sure that these items do not end up donated, or even more often in a dumpster. The items are not limited to household items, but are often valuable sets of silver, antique clocks, fine art and the accumulated collection of coins, knick-knacks or other valuables. You can also find practical items like pots and pans, kitchen appliances, designer clothing and women’s accessories like scarves, wallets and shoes. They price items reasonably, but at a rate that the owners can live with.  “It’s a fine line to walk when you are pricing the contents of a home, you want to sell it, but you don’t want to give it away… You have to give the stuff dignity, so to speak and please the homeowner too”, says Wendy King of EstatesNY.  But Estate Sales patrons know that there is no end to the possibilities!  Recently at a sale my clients purchased an antique set of sterling flatware for $4,000, a French clock, and a couple of vintage Louis Vuitton purses priced around $295 each.  While at the sale they also called their Mom when they saw a microwave for $15.00 knowing that hers had just died and she needed a new one! That was added to their tab totaling $5,215.00 worth of items.

Estate Sales are primarily advertised on line and in the local newspapers. There are often as many as 10 different sales going on over a weekend, and if you speak to the customers, they will tell you that they map out their morning so they go to the best sounding sale first, and then subsequently, those who don’t rate as highly in their eyes.  It is a bit of a guessing game, and sometimes the ads lure you in, but the items aren’t always what they seem to be advertised as. So you have to figure out which are the freshest and best estates, meaning which houses will contain the treasures they are interested in purchasing. You have to read between the lines to figure out which houses will really have treasure, and those that will have nothing more than junk.  More importantly the object is to be early to the house to be the first one into the house to grab up the best treasures… usually the best items are sold within the first 5 minutes. Dealers and collectors alike know that if they don’t get there early, and aren’t among the the first five people let into a home, they will not get the most desirable finds.

This craze is also immortalized on television, there are reality shows like Cash and Cari, a show on HGTV about a woman in the Midwest who does these sales, and in fact even has a consignment, antique store for the leftover items that do not get sold at the sale.  Then there is Big Brian the Fortune Seller on tru TV, for much over-exaggerated drama…

There are even websites that will help you map out your conquests, by showing you where all of the sales are on a map that you can use to plan your route.  So happy treasure hunting, but bring plenty of cash ……..money talks!
